COVID-19 stopped the world in its tracks with its high contagiousness. Having experienced SARS in 2002, H1N1 in 2009, and MERS in 2013, the people of Korea are all too familiar with the fear of mass infections.

Despite past experiences, we are learning as a society that the three instances had not sufficiently prepared us for the next epidemic. Conflicts between privacy and public interest, the government’s hard stance against the spread of fake news, the unforeseen need for remote-learning, and platform laborers being forced to work without sufficient protective equipment are all problems that showed us that COVID-19 is not just a biological problem we face, but also a problem with deep societal implications.

Some experts predict that living in the age of epidemics will become the new normal. What we must do together now is to find solutions to societies’ problems that have become prominent with the advent of COVID-19.
